Abstract

This book looks at the history of the EU's trade negotiations with China from 1975 to 2019 from a distinctive perspective the EU as a linkage power. The author explains how the EU through linkage strategies speaks with one voice, overcomes its weakness in military capabilities and translates its non-military capabilities into advantages and influences in some specific policy areas. The book systematically traces the European negotiators' tactics in managing the EU's trade relations with China. It's the first time that the history of EU-China trade negotiations is presented to the public by a seasoned trade negotiator. The author, combining the identities of a negotiator and a scholar, gives a panoramic view of EU-China trade relations from 1975, when the European Economic Community established diplomatic relations with China, to 2019 when the Juncker Commission leaves office. This book will appeal to policymakers, think-tankers, professors and students, as well as anyone who is interested in trade policies and negotiations in the EU and China. Abstract

This open access book examines the relationship between trade and women’s economic empowerment by focusing on small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in six countries: Cambodia, Ghana, Madagascar, Nigeria, Senegal and Vietnam. The authors make use of both survey data and qualitative analysis to understand why and how trade can create more jobs for women, and how the jobs created are contributing to women’s empowerment. They propose strategies and policies for ensuring that women can benefit from trade. After providing the context for the research and reviewing the literature on trade and gender in the introductory chapter, the second chapter analyzes survey data collected for this project. This is followed by a qualitative analysis of the six country cases in the next two chapters: Cambodia and Vietnam (Chapter 3), followed by Ghana, Madagascar, Nigeria and Senegal (Chapter 4). The final chapter concludes with a summary of our findings and policy recommendations. Abstract

This book advances North Atlantic Treaty Organization (henceforth, NATO) burden analysis through a decomposition of the political, financial, social, and defense burdens members take on for the institution. The overemphasis of committing a minimum of 2% of member state Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to defense spending, as a proxy indicator of alliance commitment does not properly reflect how commitments reduce risks should Article V be invoked through attack (i.e., 2% is a political & symbolic target adopted by Defense Ministers in 2006 at Riga). Considering defense burdens multi-dimensionally explains why some members overcontribute, as well as, why burden sharing negotiations cause friction among 30 diverse members with differing threats and risks. In creating a comprehensive institutional burden management model and focusing on risks to members, the book explores the weaknesses of major theories on the study and division of collective burdens and institutional assets. It argues that member risks and threats are essential to understanding how burdens are distributed across a set of overlapping institutions within NATO’s structure providing its central goods. The importance of the USA, as a defense underwriter for some, affects negotiations despite its absence from research empirically; new data permit testing the argument (Kavanaugh 2014). This book contributes conceptual innovation and theoretical analysis to advance student, researcher, and policymaker understanding of burden management, strategic bargaining, and defense cooperation. The contribution is a generalizable risk management model of IO burden sharing using NATO as the case for scientific study due to its prominence. Anessa L. Kimball is Director of the Center for International Security at the École supérieur D’études Internationales and Professor in the Department of Political Science at Université Laval, Québec City. Abstract

The book considers the impact of COVID-19 on the GCC member states through the prism of challenges faced by their hydrocarbon sector. Yet, the publication’s discourse is not solely focused on the problems experienced by the oil and gas industries of the GCC member states after the beginning of the COVID pandemic. Instead, the contributors will analyze how these challenges and subsequent response to them affected other aspects of the GCC socio-economic and political development, from direct impact of the COVID on the energy sector of the GCC to socio-economic consequences of the oil market crisis for the region and its potential fallouts for the international relations of the Gulf. Abstract

This book presents a systemic view of the global environmental economy under the conditions of climate change from the positions of Sustainable Development Goals. The purpose of the book is to study the current problems of the global environmental economy under the conditions of climate change and to determine the prospects of its sustainable development (systemic support for the SDGs). This goal predetermines the logic and structure of the book, which is comprised of five parts. Part I presents the authors’ novel view of the global environmental economy under the conditions of climate change from the positions of the SDGs. It reflects the contradiction and describes the path of preserving economic growth during the implementation of SDG 13. The COVID-19 pandemic and economic crisis are considered as the result of the reduction of biodiversity under the conditions of climate change from the positions of SDG 3. Responsible innovations, eco-friendly products, and green trade are presented as trends of the environmental economy under the conditions of climate change to support SDG 12. Green jobs are analyzed in the environmental economy under the conditions of climate change during the implementation of SDG 8. The significance of social inclusivity and reduction of the inequality of the environmental economy under the conditions of climate change to support SDG 10 is noted. Part II elaborates on the sectoral specifics of the influence of climate change on the environmental economy: energetics, finance, industry, state management, and agriculture. Part III presents and discusses the international experience of development of the environmental economy under the conditions of climate change given the specifics of developed and developing countries and based on the case experience of Central Asia, the EAEU, and Russia. In Part IV, technological transition (Fourth Industrial Revolution) is offered as a perspective response of the global economic policy to climate change. Scenarios of the fight against climate change in the Decade of Action depending on the scale of the technological transition are described: digital economy vs Industry 4.0 and Society 5.0. The perspectives of the technological transition at the level of companies (creation of cyber-physical systems of Industry 4.0; green digital innovations and smart ESG finance) and regions (smart region as a socio-economic environment with large adaptability to climate change) are described.

Abstract

M&A transactions are significantly more complex processes than the mere purchase and sale of goods - SMEs can quickly find themselves in unfamiliar situations - especially when it comes to multi-layered activities with players from different cultures, in particular from China, as Germany's largest foreign trade partner. The need for practical knowledge is correspondingly great. This book therefore brings together, on a theoretical basis, the practical knowledge needed for the successful planning, implementation and integration of German-Chinese corporate takeovers in the SME sector. After a compact presentation of the economic background, cultural aspects of negotiation and regulatory framework conditions, the course of corporate transactions and their German-Chinese peculiarities are dealt with in detail. The book concludes with a guide to the core aspects of such transactions and an exemplary presentation of case studies. In generally understandable language and well-illustrated, the success factors as well as possible stumbling blocks are revealed. A clearly structured and cleverly formulated handbook that every potential seller, buyer, and advisor should have at hand. The contents - Germany as a Chinese target market - Economic background - Cultural factors - Regulatory framework - Process of company takeovers - Special features of German-Chinese transactions - Guidelines for successful cooperation - Case studies The Editor Prof. Dr. Daniel Graewe is a lawyer, professor of business law and director of the Institute for Applied Business Law at HSBA Hamburg School of Business Administration; as a lawyer, he advised on numerous German-Chinese M&A transactions. Abstract

This book examines the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in East Africa. The BRI is considered China's central geopolitical and geo-economic project in the era of President Xi Jinping. Through this work, the author aims to contribute to filling some research gaps, such as the lack of depth in studies of individual BRI projects and the underconsideration of processing narratives in participating countries. The guiding question is the extent to which the BRI is a political or hegemonic project of the CCP-directed state-civil society complex in East Africa. To answer these questions, databases of international organizations and policy documents are analyzed. In addition, the author conducts a qualitative content analysis of newspaper articles from local media houses in the countries of Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania to examine three infrastructure projects. The work illustrates that the BRI contributes to increasing connectivity in East Africa. At the same time, the compression of economic relations and the implementation of infrastructure projects in East Africa lead to numerous consequences and contour a hegemonic project. The Author Simon Züfle studied political science, history and international relations in Freiburg, Tübingen, Madrid, Moscow, Tehran and Beijing. He is currently a postdoctoral researcher in the research group "Doing Business in Africa" at the ESB Business School of Reutlingen University. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence. A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content.

Abstract

This book introduces a new economic and financial system to replace the flawed current system. The past financial crises, including the Great Depression, the Global Financial Crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, have showed us that the global financial system has problems and that a paradigm change and mindset shift to provide a better world to society is essential. This book brings a new sustainable approach to replace the current system and will be of interest to academics, policymakers, and professionals working with financial markets, financial economics, sustainability, and impact finance. Abstract

“This book is an excellent addition to the literature in this field of economic interconnections and networks as it provides a framework for understanding and explaining economic, institutional, national, and social interactions and relationships. Moreover, the book offers policy implications on how to mitigate vulnerabilities resulted by incoherent interconnections, focusing on the Greek economy, which is service-oriented and characterized by low dynamism. Overall, it will be of great value to researchers, students, and practitioners alike.” — Dimitrios Kenourgios, Professor of Department of Economics, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens “This book provides a rich and innovative portrayal of the Greek economy and its challenges. By focusing on sectoral interconnections, relations among industries and corporate networks it links macroeconomic evaluation with microeconomic detail necessary for more refined industrial policy design. The varied and transdisciplinary approaches of the contributing authors illuminate both our understanding of the Greek government debt crisis and the ways to achieve sustainable development. Students, researchers, and policymakers will have much to gain from reading this book.” — Andreas Papandreou, Professor of Department of Economics, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens This book examines the interconnections of the Greek economy at a macro and micro level, allowing it to explore both the economic relations between the various sectors and the interconnections of various companies and overlaps in management boards. Two approaches are used to quantify interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral interfaces: the traditional input-output analysis approach and the “influence and information flow” approach through network analysis. The book presents the current conditions and the economic interconnections within the Greek economy. During the analysis of microeconomic interconnections, a much more thorough presentation of the economic interconnections of Greek companies is established. Finally, how the Greek economy must transform its production prototype under structural constraints and opportunities for economic diversification and inclusive growth and under the pressure of economic shocks and uncertainty is presented. Panagiotis E. Petrakis is an Emeritus Professor (Department of Economics, NKUA, Greece), and Scientific Coordinator of Distance Education Training Programs.
